Sony Hopes to Create AI Bots that Pretend to be Real PlayStation Gamers

Sony is working to create virtual players that, with the help of artificial intelligence, can play with you or against you in your online games as if they were real players.

This is about taking the machine-controlled individuals in the game to a new level. These virtual gamers behave like real people playing their PlayStation 5 consoles at home.

According to Sony’s document, artificial intelligence will “use reinforcement learning” to create artificial intelligence agents for games. These agents “can be the player’s opponents in the game or his partners”.

This is a developing situation, which means that, as far as we know, there are still no artificial intelligence-powered bots posing as humans in PlayStation games. They are just a concept, a concept that will exist in the future.

In fact, this is not a new concept. People in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) have been using bots for some time. They abandoned AI-driven players in the game, and these players behaved like human-driven players. Their goal seems to be (and still is) to make the game easier for new players.

What do you think of the thoughts of peers and competitors controlled by AI in PlayStation’s online games? Would you be angry if you find that the “people” you play and fight within online multiplayer games are actually just bots?
